Computer scientist and teacher Ian King has taught more than 40,000 students in Britain since 2010.
But he has recently spoken out about the ways he sees a growing number of students struggling to find the right computer science degree, with the majority saying they’re “missing out” on a degree in computer science.
“We’ve seen a lot of people trying to go into computer science without having any knowledge about the subject, and it’s a very difficult area,” he told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota in an exclusive interview.
“People are coming into the world with no understanding of the subject and are just coming in thinking, ‘Oh, I’m going to do it this way.'”
“It’s very hard to find students who are qualified to do that.
They’re missing out.”
The BBC asked King to explain how he sees the situation with young people, and he explained how his students’ struggles to get the required skills to start working in the industry has impacted their future.
“There are so many different issues in terms of the education system that I see in the UK, and I see the problem there in a lot more ways than just this one,” he said.
“It is a massive problem in our industry.
The problem is not just with the universities, but in the wider education system.”
A lot of the young people that I’m teaching don’t have the knowledge that they need, they don’t understand what’s required to be a computer scientist.
“The fact that they’re learning it on the internet means they’re not able to get it through their curriculum.”
They don’t know how to do things, they’re missing in the process of learning.
“A survey of students who had taken the computer science course found that only 26 percent of them were confident in their ability to complete the course.
King told Camerota that the survey showed the need for more training.”
I think that there is an opportunity to look at different ways to provide support for young people,” he explained.”
To provide opportunities for them to work in a different career area, whether it’s teaching, or learning something new, or getting involved in the local community, or working with a company, or whatever it is.
“In terms of our students having that support and a pathway into a different field, I think that’s a really good thing.”
King’s research has led to the publication of his latest book, A Computer Science Degree: Unlocking the Secrets of the Future, and his advice for aspiring computer scientists has been featured on TV shows such as MasterChef, The Big Bang Theory and The Biggest Loser.
