How to Get a Computer Degree at UC Berkeley
Posted January 15, 2018 07:05:25UC Berkeley has become the first university in the world to offer computer programming and design courses.
The program, which began last year and has received national attention, will train students for positions in the IT field, including computer support services, IT and database administrators.
The university has been working on the program for two years, according to the university.
The first classes have been offered since March 2017, when the university announced they would be offered as a full-time program.
“Computer science is really the first area that has attracted us, because the industry is really booming, so we are a great fit,” said Christopher Buechner, associate dean for student life and dean of undergraduate studies.
“We’ve got great technology here, we’ve got a great environment, and we are just in a really unique location where there’s an incredible concentration of graduates.”
The program is open to all undergraduate students who meet the required GPA of 3.5 and demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in the industry.
The university expects about 500 students will graduate with computer science degrees this fall.
The courses, which are offered in English and Spanish, have not been certified by the College Board, which certifies programs.
UC Berkeley officials are not certifying the courses because they have not met all of the requirements, including their content, but they are taking steps to ensure that they meet the requirements in the future.
Buechning said the program is important to the college, but said it is also vital for UC Berkeley students to be able to work with their peers in the field.
“When we have a class that is offered, that is our biggest advantage in the business world,” he said.
“We are working on getting those certification, and I would say that’s something we are going to have to look at in the near future.”
The courses are available for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of computer science, said UC Berkeley computer science instructor Matthew H. Taylor.
Students who have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or an associate’s degree can enroll in the program through the program’s online offerings, or through a traditional university class.
Students in the computer science program may apply to take courses online, but those courses are optional and not required to enroll in UC Berkeley’s online program.
The first class is scheduled to begin in January.
The next classes are expected to be offered in March.
